It Depends
The safest answer in the industry. And the most dangerous one.
It depends. The industrial way of saying “I don’t know”
Lately, I have had a few meetings with customers.
Different companies. Different needs. Different goals.
But I heard one sentence in all of them.
“It depends.”
It depends on how often the production changes.
If you can still find workers for the night shift.
If someone in management says yes or says “maybe next year.”
It depends on the factory space, on electricity, on planning.
Sometimes it depends on where the label cart is parked.
Most of the time, it depends on fifteen million things.
Some of them are totally out of your control.
So no, I am not making fun of “it depends.”
I really understand it.
This sentence protects us from bad decisions.
But sometimes, it also protects us from making any decisions.

Robots are simple.
Cycle time: 3.2 seconds.
Payload: 8 kilograms.
Reach: 931 millimeters.
No “it depends.”
It works, or it doesn’t.
Then a human comes in and everything becomes foggy.
Because life is not a fixed cycle.
It has budgets, stress, too few people, and a CEO who is “still thinking.”
I do not have a perfect answer.
I am not here to judge.
But after all those meetings, I thought of one thing.
Robotics does not start with robots.
It starts with a decision.
It may not be perfect.
But it has to be clear.
And it has to happen.
So keep saying “it depends,”
but maybe add one more sentence after it:
“It depends… but if we do nothing, we already know what will happen.”
Because sometimes, the worst decision is no decision.
And the future does not depend.
It just happens.
Cheers, Jacek!
